Gardeners Shadwell is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety, and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors, contractors, and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy explains how we manage risks associated with gardening work and how we expect everyone involved to act to maintain a safe working environment.

Our Health and Safety Commitment

We aim to prevent accidents, injuries, and work-related ill health on all gardening projects. To achieve this, we will identify hazards, assess risks, and put in place sensible control measures. We will provide appropriate information, instruction, training, and supervision so that work is carried out safely and in accordance with relevant health and safety legislation and best practice for gardening and landscape maintenance.

Responsibilities

Overall responsibility for health and safety within Gardeners Shadwell lies with the company management. Management is responsible for ensuring suitable resources, safe systems of work, and up-to-date risk assessments for gardening activities. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for implementing this policy on site, monitoring working practices, and addressing any unsafe behaviour or conditions immediately.

All employees, whether permanent, temporary, or seasonal, must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Workers must follow training and instructions, use equipment properly, and report hazards, near misses, accidents, or unsafe conditions to their supervisor without delay.

Clients and other visitors to sites where we work are expected to cooperate with Gardeners Shadwell in maintaining a safe environment, including respecting safety cordons, signage, and guidance from our staff.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Before carrying out gardening and grounds maintenance tasks, we will carry out risk assessments to identify potential hazards such as slips and trips, manual handling, sharp tools, powered machinery, exposure to noise and vibration, and weather conditions. For each job, we will implement safe systems of work proportionate to the level of risk, and we will review and update assessments when circumstances change or following any incident.

Where necessary, specific risk assessments will be carried out for high-risk tasks such as tree work, working at height, hedge trimming at height, and use of chainsaws or other high-powered equipment. Only competent and trained workers will be allowed to undertake these tasks.

Training, Information, and Supervision

Gardeners Shadwell will provide appropriate induction and ongoing training so that employees understand the hazards associated with gardening work and how to manage them. Training may include the safe use of lawnmowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, and other machinery, manual handling techniques, safe use and storage of chemicals and fertilisers, and awareness of environmental and wildlife protection.

Supervisors will monitor working practices to ensure safe procedures are followed and will provide additional guidance or refresher training where necessary. Instructions and safety information will be given in a clear and practical way so that all workers can follow them confidently.

Use of Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment

All gardening tools, machinery, and vehicles used by Gardeners Shadwell must be suitable for the task, maintained in good working order, and inspected regularly. Defective or damaged equipment must be taken out of use immediately and reported to management so that it can be repaired or replaced.

Personal protective equipment will be provided where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means. Depending on the task, this may include safety boots, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing, and protective clothing when using chemicals or equipment that may generate debris. Employees are responsible for using PPE as instructed, looking after it properly, and reporting any loss or damage.

Chemical and Environmental Safety

Where herbicides, pesticides, fertilisers, fuels, or other substances are used, Gardeners Shadwell will follow product instructions, safety data, and applicable regulations. Chemicals will be stored, transported, and applied in a way that minimises risk to people, wildlife, soil, and water sources.

We will strive to protect the environment and local biodiversity while carrying out gardening work. This includes avoiding unnecessary damage to plants, trees, and habitats and following any site-specific environmental requirements agreed with clients.

Working in Client Gardens and Public Areas

Many of our services are delivered in domestic gardens, shared outdoor spaces, and publicly accessible areas. We will plan work to minimise risks to residents, visitors, and passers-by. This may include using barriers or cones, temporary signage, or scheduling certain tasks at quieter times. Tools and materials will be stored safely during and after work to reduce tripping hazards and prevent unauthorised access, especially by children or pets.

Accidents, Incidents, and First Aid

All accidents, injuries, near misses, and dangerous occurrences must be reported to a supervisor as soon as possible. Gardeners Shadwell will investigate incidents to identify underlying causes and to implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Where required, incidents will be recorded and reported in line with legal obligations.

Appropriate first aid arrangements will be in place when gardening work is carried out. This includes maintaining suitable first aid kits within vehicles or on site and ensuring that workers know how to access first aid assistance promptly.

Health, Welfare, and Wellbeing

We recognise that gardening work can be physically demanding and involves working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Gardeners Shadwell will take reasonable steps to manage risks associated with manual handling, repetitive tasks, heat, cold, sun exposure, and hydration. Employees are encouraged to take regular breaks as appropriate, use sun protection when needed, and follow safe lifting and handling techniques at all times.

Monitoring, Review, and Continuous Improvement

We will monitor our health and safety performance through regular site checks, equipment inspections, and review of incident reports and feedback from staff and clients. This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes to our activities, legislation, or industry best practice. We are committed to continuous improvement and welcome constructive suggestions from employees and clients on how to make our gardening services safer.
